quiet moments in a world of chaos

creativity

It amazes me at times how creative my girls can be.

I love watching them solve problems, discover something that seems so simple to an adult, and using their imaginations to keep themselves busy for hours.

our book basket

My girls love to read.

They have me read at least five books each day, which doesn’t include their nighttime books (usually three or four short stories or poems).  I keep a basket of books in the living room for them to choose from, rotating new books each week for variety.

cleaning, with children

It’s hard to imagine my life without two rambunctious little girls bouncing around my living room, hiding in my bed or following me into the bathroom.  Since I stay at home with them, it’s up to me to make sure that all the cooking and cleaning gets done during the day.

I’ve read blog posts from frazzled mothers who struggle to “get it all done”.  I’m lucky, since I only have two children and we live in a very small place, but even with less to clean than other people, I still have to do it with giggling toddlers hanging onto my legs.

Reminiscing

My mom has always been good about hanging on to things that could one day mean something to her kids or possibly her grandkids. One of my favorite toys was my baby doll cradle. When my parents came to visit last, my mom brought the cradle for Ariana and Harper to use.

They adore it. Most of the time (like now), it’s full of blankets. It’s actually rare that there is a baby doll in there, even though the girls have at least a dozen!

fighting colds

My least favorite part of the weather changing is the fact that every year, I inevitably catch a cold.  I sleep as much as I can, drink herbal tea with honey and lemon, sip chicken broth and kick the cold to the curb within a few days.

Unfortunately this year, I am not sick.

“Wait,” you say to yourself, “weren’t you just complaining about catching a cold?”

Why yes I was.  The problem is that my babies have both caught colds.  It breaks my heart to hear their tiny coughs, to see the red spots under their noses from wiping off the runniness.

diaper stash and storage

I’ve had a few emails asking about our cloth diapers and storage, so instead of replying to each individually, I thought it would be fun to post the questions and answers.

What kind of diapers do you use and how quickly do you go through them?

For Harper, we exclusively use BumGenius pocket diapers, all bought from Fluff Envy. (Side note: I can’t say enough good things about Fluff Envy- great diaper deals & the diapers arrived really quickly!)

Potty Training

It’s finally happened!

At age two and a half, I am officially calling Ariana a potty-trained toddler.  We (both Ariana and I) have learned a lot during this process and I want to share how we did it.

Sign Language and a Movie Review!

When Ariana was small and unable to talk, I decided that I wanted to teach her some basic sign language so she could communicate more easily.  She quickly mastered a few of the basics- milk, more, eat, cup and please.  She used them all, even as she learned to saw the words.  As Ariana grew, I used signing less and less because I wanted to start helping her with words instead.

Since it worked so well with Ariana, I decided to try signing with Harper too.  I bought a Baby Einstein video called Baby Wordsworth, which was incredibly helpful to both girls (and me too!).  The girls don’t usually sit down to watch an entire video, but they adore this one.  They watch it 2 or 3 times on repeat without moving to something else!
