homemade placemats

As soon as Terry painted our dining room table-top bright teal, I knew I needed to create some fun, bright placemats for it.  I headed to the store in search of the right fabric for both the placemats and to re-upholster (is that really how you spell it?  Guess I’ve spelled it wrong for years!) the chairs.

This is what I came up with:

The paisley was perfect for the chairs and as soon as I saw the bird fabric, I knew I couldn’t leave the store without it!  I wanted a semi-coordinating fabric for the back, so I chose a lightly quilted blue.

After a month of procrastination being busy,  I sat down at the sewing machine yesterday, determined to finish the six placemats before the end of the day.  It took two hours, but after measuring, cutting, sewing, having a brief breakdown after my sewing machine repeatedly freaked out on me, flipping the fabric and adding a decorative stitch outside, the placemats were d-o-n-e.

Considering I’m not the most talented sew-er (if you think that hyphen looks odd, let’s try without, which means I’m not a talented sewer… which is also true, I s’pose…), I think they turned out pretty darn good!

(Let’s ignore that little white thread that I missed, shall we?)

And for fun, here’s what they look like when the table is set!

Like that extremely intricate centerpiece?  It cost me $1, thanks to the Dollar Tree!  I couldn’t have made it for that cheap.
